Hurricane "Michael" hits Florida with great force
Hurricane Michael is gaining strength and is expected to be a major hurricane when it reaches land in northwest Florida on Wednesday, the US National Hurricane Center said on Tuesday.
The epicenter of Hurricane Michael was spotted at 2 pm EST (1800 GMT), about 500 km southwest of Appalachicola, Florida, the center said.
The winds accompanying the hurricane were at a top speed of 175 kilometers per hour, moving north over the eastern Gulf of Mexico, he said.
The center, based in Miami, predicted areas along the north-east Gulf coast would see a serious surge in the storm, strong winds and heavy rains.

Florida Governor Rick Scott announced a state of emergency in more than 20 provinces in the state, putting more than 5,000 National Guard troops on alert.
"Families should seize the opportunity today to ensure they have enough food and water for three days, as well as all the medicines they need," Scott wrote on Twitter on Monday.
"Every family should be ready, we can build your homes, but we can not restore your lives."
"Michael" was accompanied by a strong wind and heavy rain fell Sunday and Monday on parts of Mexico and Cuba as he passed through the Caribbean.
The cyclone center said the hurricane had moved north on a route between the island of Cozumel in southeastern Mexico and the western tip of Cuba.
After hitting Florida, the storm is expected to move on Wednesday and Thursday toward the northeast on the Atlantic coast towards the states of North and South Carolina, which are still recovering from the hurricane "Florence" that hit the region last month
